Cesar returns to fixing and editing Joomla! (and WordPress) bugs and features on IIS7 and joins the Joomla! Bugsquad.

A few months ago I started posting fixes for the Joomla! application running on IIS7. The main reason was because I was unhappily using IIS7 and was trying to fix it. What seemed like a blessing at first turned out to be a real pain. A few of the features in Joomla! generated server errors which left me quite annoyed. After a month or two of frustration I quit using IIS7 and started using Linux. Nonetheless this post is to inform those that were quite happy with the fixes I provided then that I am back to using Joomla! on IIS7 once again. This time however I have taken the correct route and joined the Joomla! Bugsquad so that any fixes I help with are incorporated into the core. But no, I am not testing on this server, I need my Linux-served WordPress powered site (WP which was also unhappy on IIS7) to work without the shenanigans. I have installed it on my other server http://damnbugs.com/joomla which I plan to use primarily for ASP.NET development purposes. It is time to get my hands dirty once again!

WordPress' permalink bug found in v2.6 fix found!

One of my friends never updates her computer’s programs because of a bad experience a new version of a music program caused her. I never really felt new, “better”, software would be that evil…so I paid no mind.

Last night I gave into a little flashing image that would appear on my website’s control panel asking me to update WordPress to a new version. What a mistake. WordPress, as much as I love it, in version 2.6, has a big bug in it’s permalink function. Page urls were rewritten properly, but not posts. Every time a post would be selected, a 404 page not found error would occur. I flat-out blamed IIS7 since it has been behind many errors in my open source application installations lately. But looking around the web I noticed that it wasn’t IIS7′s fault but WORDPRESS! Apparently somehow this bug was overlooked in the release of version 2.6.

Fortunately they have been made aware and the bug is going to be fixed for version 2.6.1. But for those of you that want the fix NOW. Here is the quick version of the fix.

Stuck with two home pages when using WordPress? Find out how to remove/ rename one of them in this post.

Solution is as of WordPress v2.5.1

WordPress is one of the OpenSource software sector’s best programs. However one of the problems one might have with it when trying to configure it is having two Home pages. This occurs when you assign your posts and home page to specific static pages instead of the default, autogenerated “Home”. What you are left with is an extra, uneditable, undeletable “Home” page. To rid yourself of this you simply pop open your current theme’s Header.php file and delete or comment out the code that creates that first tab. Code below.

<?php wp_list_pages('title_li='); ?>
